Web5 de nov. de 2012 · It has two 12AX7's in the preamp. Unfortunately, the gain is too hot and the amp begins to distort at about 4 with a passive Precision Bass. I'd like to have a larger sweet spot with this amp. Volume is not an issue as it's mostly used to record, not keep up with a drummer. Can it hurt an amp to use lower gain tubes in place of 12ax7's, like ... Web4 de jun. de 2012 · I have built a 6 stage high gain preamp for screaming lead guitar. The issue with 6 stages of gain can be hum, noise and microphonics. You may have to try a bunch of 12AX7's for the first tube to find a quiet one. Even the second tube can contribute some microphonics.
